When the people came to the temple, they pitched their tents round about, every family in its own area. But there were so many people that King Benjamin could not teach them all. His words were written and sent to those who could not hear.
He said: Open your hearts and minds so you will understand the mysteries of God. Do not fear me or think that I am more than a mortal man. I am like you. I have weaknesses in body and mind. I was chosen by you and allowed by the Lord to be your ruler king. I have served you with all the strength that the Lord has given me.
I did not take gold or silver or riches from you. I have not allowed you to be put in prisons, or allowed anyone to be a slave. I have worked with my own hands to serve you, so that you would not be loaded down with taxes. I have spent all my days in your service. I do not boast, for I have only been serving God. When you serve people, you are serving God.
If I, your earthly king, deserve any thanks from you, how much more you should thank your Heavenly King! I say to you, give all the thanks and praise of your whole soul to God. Serve God who has created you and keeps you alive from day to day.
God gives you breath and helps you from one moment to the next. All He asks is that you keep His commandments. Always give God thanks. He gives you far more than you can give in return. Give to Him all that you have and are.
Think of the blessings and happiness of those who keep God’s commandments. Think of the awful life of those who sin.
I can no longer be your teacher or king. The Lord told me to tell you that my son Mosiah will now be your king and ruler.
