When Nephi spoke these words, five of the men ran to the governor-seat. As they ran, they said to each other: Now we can find out if this man is a prophet of God. We do not believe he is, but if the governor is dead, we will believe the other words he spoke.
They ran as fast as they could and came to the governor seat. They saw the governor was killed and lying in his own blood. They were so amazed, they fainted.
The governor’s servants ran and told the people. A crowd gathered at the governor seat. They saw the five men who fainted. They did not know about the words of Nephi. The people thought the five men killed the governor and God stopped them from escaping.
The five men were tied up and the judges asked them what had happened. The five men said: Nephi told us about the murder so we ran to the governor seat. The words of Nephi were true. We were so amazed, we fell to the earth. We do not know who the killer is. We only know we came and the governor was dead.
The judges then yelled out against Nephi, saying: We know Nephi must have planned with someone to kill the governor and then Nephi would tell it. He did this so he could make himself a great man. We will find Nephi and make him confess his crime and tell us who the killer is.
Nephi was tied up and brought to the judges. They said to him: Admit your guilt. We will let you go and give you money if you tell us who the killer is.
Nephi said to them: You fools, you blind people. You ought to howl and cry because of the great death waiting for you, unless you repent.
You say I have planned with a man to murder Seezoram. I will show you another sign. Go to the house of Seantum, the brother of Seezoram. Ask him if I planned with him to kill his brother? He will tell you: No. Then ask him: Did you kill your brother? He will begin to fear and he will not know what to say. He will deny it and act surprised. You will find blood on the edges of his coat.
Ask him: Where did this blood come from? We know it is the blood of your brother. He will start to shake and look pale. Then say: We know you are guilty.
He will confess to you that he killed his brother, the governor. He will tell you that I, Nephi, could only know about his plan by the power of God. Then you will know I am an honest man and that I was sent to you from God.
So they went to Seantum and Nephi’s words happened as he said. The five men and Nephi were set free. Some Nephites believed because of Nephi; some believed because of the story told by the five men.
