God sent a great curse on the land. If a person put a tool or sword on a shelf, the next day it could not be found. Everyone held tight to their things. No one would share. Every man kept his sword in his hand to fight for his property and his life and for his wives and children.

The wars were so terrible; dead bodies covered the land. The awful stink of death filled the air night and day.
