Alma 9

The people began to argue with Alma, saying: Who do you think you are? Do you think we will believe the word of one man who says that this great city will be destroyed in one day? Who is this God that sends a single man to this people to say such things?

They tried to grab Alma, but they could not hold him. Alma spoke to them boldly, saying: You wicked people, so soon you forget God’s commandments.

Can you remember our father, Lehi, who came out of Jerusalem by the hand of God? Can you remember that God led them through the wilderness? Have you forgotten so soon the many times God saved our fathers from their enemies? If it had not been for God’s great mercy and long-suffering to us, we would have been killed long ago.

Repent or you will be destroyed. God says: If you keep my commandments, you will be blessed. If you do not keep my commandments, you will be cut off.

In the Day of Judgment, it will be more merciful for them than for you, if you remain in your sins. Their sins come from not knowing truth and from the evil traditions of their fathers. The Lord will be merciful to them.

Your time in the land will not be long. If you, who receive so many blessings from the Lord, continue to go against the light and knowledge that you have, the Lamanites will be sent on you. They will come in a time when you know not and they will destroy you.

When I, Alma, spoke these words, the people were angry because I said they were a stubborn and fallen people. They tried to grab me to put me in prison, but the Lord’s power stopped them.
