Mosiah 5

When King Benjamin finished speaking, the people cried with a single voice, saying, “We believe everything you’ve told us and we know it is true because the spirit of God has changed our hearts. Our inclination to do evil is gone and we desire to be good, forever. Because of the prophecies, we know what is coming and embrace it. Our faith in what our King has told us has brought us great knowledge and joy. We are willing to enter into a promise with God to obey his words and commandments for the rest of our lives. We do not want to end up in the eternal torment that the angel has spoken of and receive God’s anger instead of his love.”

“Those are the words I wanted to hear,” said King Benjamin. “The covenant you’ve made is a righteous one. Now, I want to give you a new name that will identify and distinguish you. Because you have accepted this covenant with Jesus Christ, you will be called the Children of Christ. You are his sons and daughters, because today he has conceived you spiritually. If you tell me that your hearts are changed through your faith in Jesus Christ, then I say that you have been born of him. Only through him can you be free; so I implore you to take the name of Christ with you everywhere, to remember your covenant for as long as you live. Whoever does this will find himself on the right-hand of God.

“On the other hand, whoever does not take on the name of Christ must take some other name and stand on the left-hand side of God. As Children of Christ, you will carry this name as long as you do not sin. Write it in your hearts and carry it with you always, so that you will know when he calls to you. How can you know a master whom you haven’t served? Does a man take care of his neighbor’s ass? No. He doesn’t want to feed someone else’s animals along with his own, so he drives it away and casts it out. This is how it will be for you if you don’t remember the name you are called. Be steady and immovable in attending to the works of Jesus Christ. Receive eternal salvation through the wisdom, power, and justice of the God who created everything.”
