During the time of Com’s rule, many prophets foretold of the destruction of the great kingdom unless the people repented and returned to God. Instead of listening, the people turned on the prophets and tried to destroy them. Because he protected the prophets, King Com was blessed for the remainder of his life. Com passed the kingdom on to his son Shiblom.
Shiblom’s brother Seth rebelled against him and brought war to the land, and death to the prophets. The prophets had made it clear that if the people misbehaved, then destruction on a horrendous scale would be assured. And this is what happened. War, famine, and disease stalked the land and killed the people. When the destruction became too great to bear, the people repented and God showed mercy on them.
Shiblom was killed, Seth was imprisoned, and Seth’s son Aha became king. Aha paid no attention to God’s laws and ruled briefly until his death. Aha’s son Etham followed him as king and continued the legacy of wicked rulers. Many prophets arose during Etham’s reign, saying that unless things changed, God would utterly destroy everyone who did not repent. The people didn’t listen.
Etham’s son Moron reigned next. He was also disrespectful and defiant towards God. Moron put down one rebellion but was overthrown later by another challenger. Moron lived the rest of his life in captivity and fathered Coriantor, who lived his entire life in captivity. Coriantor fathered the prophet Ether, who was born into captivity.
The prophets continued to forecast doom, saying that God would cause the utter destruction of the Jaredites. They said that God would bring another group of people to possess this land that had once been given to their ancestors. Because of their wickedness, the descendants of Jared chose to ignore these warnings.
