2 Nephi 31

God has shown me that Jesus Christ, who will remove the sins of the world, will first be baptized by a prophet. If Jesus Christ in his holiness needs to be baptized by water in the name of God, then surely those of us who are unholy have even greater need of baptism ourselves. By humbling himself before God, Jesus Christ bears witness that he will keep God’s commandments, and the Holy Ghost descends upon him in the form of a dove. By performing this act, Jesus Christ shows us the example which we should follow. The voice of God came to me saying, “Repent and be baptized in the name of my Beloved Son.” And the voice of the Son, Jesus Christ came to me saying, “He who is baptized in my name will receive the Holy Ghost. Follow me, and do the same things that you’ve seen me do.”

My brothers, I know that if you follow Jesus Christ’s example with all the purpose of your heart and repent your sins without deception, taking the name of Jesus Christ in baptism, then you will receive the Holy Spirit of God. But if, after having done this, you should deny God’s commandments, then it would be better if you had never known of me. God has told me that those who endure with him to the end will be saved, and those who cannot endure to the end will not be saved. Therefore, it is important that you do as I have been shown. You must pass through the gate of repentance through baptism with water, and then comes a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost. Pass through this gate and the straight path before you will lead to eternal life. By keeping God’s commandments, and enduring to the end, you will have eternal life. This is the way. There is no other way under heaven whereby you can be saved. This is the doctrine of Jesus Christ and of the Father and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God without end.
