Chapter 20 of the First Book Nephi is virtually indistinguishable, word for word, from Chapter 48 of Isaiah from the Old Testament.
Isaiah carries God’s words to the people of Jerusalem in Babylon, and chastises them for saying that they live by the word of God, while failing to do so in actuality. He reminds them that he had made predictions and that the people had seen these prophecies fulfilled. In spite of their stubbornness, God withholds his anger and does not cut them off or destroy them. God reminds them that he is first and last, that he created the heavens and earth. “If you would only listen to my word,” God says, “peace would flow like a river and your people would become too many to count. Go now, leave Babylon singing, and I will satisfy your thirst in the desert. But there will be no peace for the wicked.”
