1 Nephi 13

“Look again,” said the angel. “What do you see now?”

“I see many kingdoms and nations,” I replied.

“These are the nations and kingdoms of the Gentiles,” he said.

Among these many nations I saw the formation of a great church.

“Look now, and see the formation of a church that is more abominable than any other church,” said the angel. “It kills, tortures, and imprisons the saints of God.”

I saw that this great and abominable church was founded and led by the devil himself. I saw gold, silver, and expensive red clothing made from fine silks and linens. I also saw many prostitutes.

“As you can see,” the angel said, “this church distinguishes itself with its desire for riches, fine clothing, and whores. In pursuit of these worldly excesses, they destroy and enslave the saints of God.”

When next I looked, I saw a great ocean that divided the Gentile nations from the descendants of my brothers. “Look and you can see that the anger of God has fallen upon your brothers’ descendants.”

Next, I was shown a single Gentile man on the Old World continent opposite the ocean from my brothers’ descendants. The Spirit of God came upon him, and inspired him to cross the ocean and discover the promised land in which my brothers’ descendants lived. After this discovery, many others from the Gentile nations were also filled with the Spirit of God, and followed him to the promised land seeking freedom from abuse and slavery. They became the instruments of God’s anger for the punishing and scattering of my brothers’ descendants. The Spirit of God blessed these Gentiles in the promised land. Like my own slain and exterminated descendants, they were white skinned, fair, and beautiful. These Gentiles were humble before God and received his blessings because the power of God was with them.

The angel showed me a gathering of Gentile armies from the kingdoms of the Old World across the ocean that came to do battle with the New World Gentiles. Because the blessing and power of God was with the New World Gentiles, they were guided to victory and delivered from freedom and slavery at the hands of all other nations. The people of the New World prospered and carried a book with them as they spread out across the promised land.

“Do you know the meaning of this book?” the angel asked.

“I do not,” I replied.

“The book you see,” said the angel, “is a record of the Jewish people and contains the commandments of God to the descendants of Israel. It contains many prophecies from the holy prophets. It is a record like the brass plates you have brought with you from Jerusalem, except that many parts of the holy record are missing from it. It is of great importance to the Gentiles. Before this book was first adopted by the Gentiles, it contained the full and complete gospel of God. The twelve apostles testified that it bore the complete and truthful record of Jesus Christ.”

“After the Gentiles adopted it,” the angel continued, “the great and abominable church that you saw began removing important parts of it, including many of the covenants made with God. This was done purposefully to pervert the true ways of God, blind the people’s eyes, and close the hearts of men and women. You can see for yourself how the great and abominable church has corrupted the holy scriptures of Jesus Christ. Because of these corruptions, many Gentiles stumble on the path and are overpowered by Satan.”

“God has promised your father that his descendants would have this promised land for their inheritance. So he will not allow the Gentiles who come later, and are also favored by God, to utterly destroy them. Neither, in his great mercy, will he permit these Gentiles to remain forever blinded because of the corruptions introduced by the great and abominable church.”

“Jesus Christ has said,” the angel continued, “that when he brings his great judgment and mercy to your father’s descendants, he will also bring with him a restoration of the true gospel that has been lost. Your descendants will witness his visitation, teachings, and mercy. They will write this down and hide it away before their descendants falter in unbelief. After they are destroyed, your descendants’ words will eventually be given to the Gentiles as a gift from God. From your descendants, these Gentiles will receive God’s true Gospel and salvation. Those who embrace this Gospel will have God’s gift and be saved in the everlasting kingdom of God.”

I was then shown how the true Gospel would come to the Gentiles in the New World. From them, I saw how it came to my brothers’ descendants, whom God would not allow to perish completely. This Gospel would convince those who could hear the truth, Gentiles, Jews, and descendants of my brothers’ alike, that the records of the prophets and the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ are true.

“These last records that you have seen,” the angel said, “will reestablish the truth that has been lost, and establish to all peoples that Jesus Christ is the Eternal Father, and the savior of the world. All men must come to him, or they will not be saved. And they must come to him according to the words and records of your descendants, and the true records of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. The time will come, in the last days, when God will again make himself visible and evident to the nations of the world and to the Jews and Gentiles, and the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
