Mosiah 29

Mosiah sent a letter to his people, saying: O my people, I say that you should have no king. Many people have sinned because of their kings. You should select judges to rule by our laws.

People usually choose right, so you should make your own laws by the voice of the people. Then, if people choose sins, the sins will come on their own heads. I want this land to be a land of liberty and equality. Let everyone enjoy equal rights and privileges.

After King Mosiah said these words, the people stopped wanting a king. They became eager for every person to have an equal vote. They organized into groups to vote for judges.

They voted Alma the younger to be the first chief judge. Alma kept God’s commandments and judged fairly. Thus began the rule of the judges. There was peace throughout the land. The people became joyful because of their freedom.

Alma the older and King Mosiah died. The people had strong love for Mosiah. They loved him more than they loved any other man. He had not taken riches from them and he made peace in the land.
