Amulon ruled over Alma and his brothers and abused them. He remembered Alma when he was one of Noah’s priests. Amulon was angry with him and put burdens on them and put mean bosses over them. The people’s hardships were so great they began to cry mightily to God. Amulon told them they should stop their prayers. He put guards over them to kill anyone who was caught praying to God.
So Alma and his people stopped praying out loud. They prayed to God in silence. The voice of the Lord came to them saying: Lift your heads and be of good comfort. I know the promise you have made to me; I promise to bring you out of slavery.
I will ease your burdens that you will not feel them on your backs. I will do this so you will know that I, the Lord God, will visit my people in their hardships.
So the slave work which Alma and his brothers were forced to do was made easy. The Lord gave them strength. They did, cheerfully and patiently, do the will of the Lord. Their faith and patience was great. The voice of the Lord came to them again, saying: Be happy, for tomorrow I will bring you out of slavery.
God said to Alma: Go before this people and I will go with you. So Alma and his people gathered their flocks and food in the night. In the morning, the Lord made a deep sleep come on the Lamanites. Then Alma and his people escaped into the wilderness.
After they traveled all day, they pitched their tents in a valley. They named it Alma. All the men, all the women and all the children who could speak, lifted their voices in praise to God. They poured out thanks to God because he had been merciful to them, eased their burdens and gave them freedom.
The Lord said to Alma: Arise and get this people out of this land. The Lamanites have awakened and they now chase after you. Get out of this land and I will stop the Lamanites in this valley so they cannot chase you.
After twelve days of walking, they arrived in the land of Zarahemla where King Mosiah welcomed them with joy.
