Fifty-five years have passed since we left Jerusalem. We work hard to help our people come to Christ and enjoy God’s goodness.

Nephi was growing old. He told me, Jacob, to take care of the records. He chose a man to rule in his place; then Nephi died. He had served the people all his life and the people loved him greatly. The people wanted to honor him. They decided new rulers would be named after him, second Nephi, third Nephi and so on.

There were many people on the land: Nephites, Jacobites, Josephites, Ishmalites, Zoramites, Lamanites and Lemuelites. All who were friendly to Nephi were called Nephites. Those who tried to destroy the Nephites were called Lamanites.

The Nephites began to search for gold and silver and to be full of pride.
