Many people heard the words Samuel the Lamanite spoke on the city walls. Those who believed him went and looked for Nephi to confess their sins and be baptized.
Many people did not believe Samuel. They threw stones at him. Many shot arrows at him as he stood upon the wall. But the Spirit of the Lord was with him, for no one could hit Samuel with stones or arrows. When they saw they could not hit him, many people believed his words.
Nephi was teaching and showing signs and wonders. He did many miracles among the people so they would know Christ would come. He told them things that would soon happen. He baptized those who believed.
Most people did not believe Samuel. When they could not hit him with stones and arrows, they climbed up the city wall to kill him. Samuel jumped down and ran back to his own country. He was never heard of again among the Nephites.
In the ninetieth year, the words of the prophets began to be fulfilled. Angels appeared to tell glad news of great joy. Many great signs were given to the people.
But the people still had hard hearts. The wicked trusted their own strength and wisdom. They said: Those who call themselves prophets are just guessing. We know all these marvelous things cannot happen. It is not reasonable that such a Christ will come. If He does come, why will He not show Himself to us?
Your words are handed down to us by our fathers, to cause us to believe in some strange thing that might happen not here, but in some far away land we cannot know about. We cannot see with our own eyes if this thing is true. You are trying to trick us to make us your slaves.
Thus ended the ninetieth year and Helaman’s book.
