When Shule died, his son Omer ruled in his place. One of Omer’s sons, Jared, battled his father and carried his father away into captivity. Omer was captive half the years of his life. Omer’s younger sons, Esrom and Coriantumr, grew up and were angry at their brother Jared. They raised an army to battle him.
They came at night and killed Jared’s army. They were about to kill Jared, too, but he begged for mercy.
Jared was sad that he lost his kingdom, for he had put his heart on the glory of the world. Jared had a daughter. She could see his sadness. She was beautiful and smart. She made a plan to win the kingdom for her father.
She asked him: Why are you so sad? Can you not remember the scriptures our fathers brought across the great sea? Those records tell of a group who had secret plans to get kingdoms and great glory.
Father, I am beautiful; send for Akish, the friend of the king. I will dance for him. I will make him want me. Tell him he can marry me if he brings you the king’s head.
When she danced for Akish, he said to Jared: Give her to me for my wife. Jared said: I will give her to you if you will bring me the head of my father, the king.
Akish gathered all Jared’s family into the house. He said to them: If I do this, will you promise to not tell? They all promised by their heads they would not tell. They also promised they would kill anyone who did tell.
