Helaman taught the people, but many would not listen. Amalickiah, the leader of the unbelievers, was a large, strong man. He wanted to be king. Amalickiah told his people that if they helped to make him king, he would make them rulers over all the people.
Many in the Church began to believe the flattering words of Amalickiah. We see how quickly the people forget God and how quickly they sin.
When Moroni heard of these troubles, he was angry with Amalickiah. Moroni tore his coat and wrote on it: In memory of our God, our religion, our freedom, our peace, our wives and our children. He tied the coat on a pole.
Moroni put on his helmet, his breastplate, his shields and his armor. He bowed himself to the earth and prayed mightily to God. After he prayed, he said: As long as we obey God, he will not allow us to be destroyed.
Moroni went among the people, waving the flag of liberty in the air. The people came running with their armor on and promised they would not abandon the Lord.
Moroni gathered all who wanted to protect their freedom. Amalickiah took his followers and ran away.
