Many of the people believed Almaβs words. They began to repent and search the scriptures.
But most of the people wanted to kill Alma and Amulek. The angry people grabbed them and tied them with strong ropes. They were taken to the chief judge. The people said many lies about them to the judge.
Zeezrom, the lawyer, said: I am guilty, not Alma and Amulek. These men are spotless before God.
Zeezrom begged the judge to spare Alma and Amulek. Now the people hated Zeezrom, too. They spit on him. They threw him out with all the others who believed in Alma and Amulek.
The angry crowd took the believers and their wives and children and threw them into a fire. They carried Alma and Amulek to the fire to make them watch the people die.
When Amulek saw the pains of the women and children in the fire, he said to Alma: How can we watch this awful scene? Let us stretch our hands and use the power of God that is in us to save them from the flames.
Alma said: The Holy Spirit stops me. The Lord will take them up to Himself in glory. God allows this to happen so the blood of the innocent will stand against the murderers.
Amulek said: Maybe we will be burned, too. Alma said: Our work is not finished, so they cannot kill us.
The chief judge hit them in their faces and said to them: After what you have seen, will you still preach to this people and have them thrown into a lake of fire? You do not have power to save them. Your God did not save them.
Then the judge hit Alma and Amulek again and asked: What do say you for yourselves? Alma and Amulek would not answer, so the judge hit them and put them into prison.
Three days later, many lawyers, judges, priests and teachers came in the prison to see them. They asked many questions, but Alma and Amulek did not answer.
A judge stood in front of them and asked: Why do you not answer their questions? Do you not know I have the power to burn you in the flames? He commanded them to speak; but Alma and Amulek would not answer.
The next day, more people came and hit Alma and Amulek and said: If you have such great power, why do you not save yourselves? The people bit them and spit on them, saying: How will we look when we are sent to hell?
They made fun of the prophets for many days. They took away their clothes, tied them with strong ropes and would not give them food or water.
The chief judge came back and beat them. He said to them: If you have Godβs power, save yourselves. Then we will believe your words. People took turns hitting them.
Then the power of God was with Alma and Amulek. They stood on their feet and Alma cried out to heaven: How long will we suffer these terrible pains, O Lord? Give us strength to be made free by our faith in Christ.
Then Alma and Amulek broke free from the strong ropes. When the people saw this, they began to run away. But they were so afraid they fell on the floor and could not even crawl.
The earth began to shake mightily and the walls of the prison fell down. The chief judge, the lawyers, the priests and the teachers who hit Alma and Amulek were all killed by the falling walls. Alma and Amulek walked out of the prison. The Lord gave them power, by their faith in Christ.
When the people of the city heard the great noise, they came running to see what happened. They saw Alma and Amulek coming out of the prison and the prison fallen to the earth.
The people became scared. They ran away from Alma and Amulek like goats running from two lions. But the people of Ammonihah would still not repent.
