Mosiah 25

When King Mosiah gathered all of his people together, he found two separate groups standing before him. The smaller group was comprised of the descendants of Nephi. The larger group were descendants of Mulek. Both of these groups together were only half as many as the Lamanite people. He read aloud the accounts of Zeniff from the time of his departure until the return of his descendants. Then he read the account of Alma.

The people were thunderstruck, filled with wonder and amazement. When they saw the people who’d been delivered from slavery, they were joyful. When they thought of their relatives who’d been killed by the Lamanites, tears of sorrow came over them. When they thought of the goodness and power of God, they gave thanks out loud. When they thought of the sinful Lamanites to whom they were related, they were filled with anguish over the state of their souls.

Before Amulon and the other priests had become renegades, they had lived among the other Nephite families in the land of Nephi. After hearing about the sins and treachery of the renegade priests, all of those who were related to the priests disowned them, and changed their names to Nephi.

When King Mosiah finished reading the accounts of Zeniff and Alma, he asked Alma to speak to his people. Alma spoke of repentance and faith in God. To all of those who had been delivered from slavery, he stressed that it was God who had delivered them. When he was through speaking, Limhi asked to be baptized by Alma, as the other members of his church had been baptized. Then all the people who had escaped from the land of Nephi clamored to be baptized by Alma also. By this baptism, all the people became united in the Church of God, because they believed in the words of Alma.

King Mosiah granted Alma a charter to organize churches throughout the land of Zarahemla and gave him power to ordain priests and teachers for every church. This had become necessary because there were too many people to assemble in one place and hear the word of God. There came to be seven churches all united as one Church of God through Alma. The same message of repentance and faith was taught in all of them. People who wanted to take the name of Jesus Christ or God joined the churches and were called the people of God. The people were blessed by the Spirit of God and prospered in the land of Zarahemla.
