Alma 61

Shortly after sending his letter to chief judge Pahoran Moroni received a letter in return. This is what it said:

“I want you to know that I take no pleasure in your hardships. I am deeply saddened by them. But there are many here who are pleased with your troubles, and have risen up in rebellion against me. It is these same people who are trying to depose me who are also withholding support from both you and Helaman. At this time I have been driven out of Zarahemla and have fled to Gideon with as many men as I could persuade to join me.

“I have sent out a proclamation asking people to take up arms in defense of our country. Every day brings us more supporters. The rebels are defying our authority, but seem afraid to actually attack us. They now have possession of Zarahemla, and have appointed a king who has made an alliance with the Lamanites. In exchange for managing the affairs of Zarahemla in support of the Lamanites, this new king has bargained to rule over us after we are defeated.

“I accept your criticism without anger, and take joy in your greatness. I do not seek power and authority over our people except in my role as chief judge, in which I work to preserve the rights and freedom of our people. I am resolute in defense of the freedom that God has given to us. I do not want to fight with the Lamanites or the rebels, but this is necessary because they invade our lands and try to overthrow our rightful government. If God told us to accept them as masters, I would comply. But he commands us to not submit to their rule. He asks that we trust in him for our deliverance.

“Moroni, let us resist this evil. Whatever evil we cannot resist with words, let us resist with swords. Let us retain our freedom to rejoice in the privilege of our church, in the cause of God, and Jesus Christ. Please come quickly with a few men to see me. Leave Lehi and Teancum in charge of the war under the guidance of God. I have sent them some supplies to help them during your absence.

“Gather up forces as you march to see me, and we will bring battle to this band of rebels through the strength of God and our faith in him. When we retake Zarahemla, we will be able to send more food to send to our armies, and put an end to this great injustice.

“Thank you for writing to me and helping me clarify what to do in response to the rebellion. As you have said, ‘Unless they repent, God commands that you oppose them.’ Tell your commanders not to fear. God will deliver them and all of those who stand strong in the freedom that God has given them.” [62 BC]
