After the destruction of the prison, Alma and Amulek were ordered to leave the city of Ammonihah. When they proceeded to the land of Sidom, they found the people of Ammonihah who had been cast out and stoned for believing in their words. The people related stories of what had happened to them and of how they had been delivered.
In Sidom, Zeezrom lay sick with a burning fever caused by his remorse. He presumed that Alma and Amulek had been killed, and he assumed personal responsibility for it. The accumulation of his multiple sins was driving Zeezrom insane with guilt and scorching him internally. When Zeezrom learned that Alma and Amulek were alive, and in Sidom, his heart was encouraged. He sent a message asking them to come to him.
Alma and Amulek found Zeezrom sick in bed and burning with fever because of his past sinfulness. When he saw them, he stretched out his hand and asked them if they could heal him. Alma took him by the hand and asked, “Do you believe in the power of salvation through Jesus Christ?”
“Yes,” Zeezrom answered, “I believe in everything that you’ve taught.”
“If you believe in the redemption of Jesus Christ, you can be healed,” said Alma.
“Yes, I believe in accordance with your words,” said Zeezrom.
“Lord God,” Alma cried out, “have mercy on this man, and heal him according to his faith in Jesus Christ.” When Alma said this, Zeezrom leapt to his feet and began to walk. News of this astonishing recovery quickly spread throughout Sidom. Afterwards, Alma baptized Zeezrom and he became a preacher of God’s word from that time forward.
Alma established a church in Sidom, and consecrated priests and teachers to give baptisms. People flocked from all around the region to be baptized.
The people of Ammonihah never repented, and attributed Alma’s power to the devil.
Amulek was rejected by his family and friends in Ammonihah, and gave up his wealth for the word of God. After establishing the church firmly in Sidom, Alma returned again to Zarahemla. He took Amulek with him into his own house, where he counseled him, and strengthened his faith in God. [81 BC]
