We began to build the kingdom and we again had peace. Still, we made many weapons for my people in case the Lamanites would war against us. I set guards round the land so the Lamanites could not come in surprise.
Our men farmed the ground and raised grains and fruits of every kind. Our women made cloth of every kind. We had good clothes. We had peace for twenty-two years.
Then King Laman died and his son ruled. He stirred up his people in hatred against us. I sent my spies to discover their plans.
The Lamanite armies came to the north of Shilom. They were armed with bows and arrows, swords, stones and slings. Their heads were shaved and they wore only a leather cloth.
I hid our women and children in the wilderness. All the men, young and old, gathered to battle against the Lamanites. I placed them in rows according to their ages. Even I, in my old age, battled against the Lamanites. And we went in the strength of the Lord to battle.
The Lamanites knew nothing of the Lord and his power. They could use only their own strength. They were strong. They were wild and cruel warriors. They were taught by their grandfathers, Laman and Lemuel, to hate us.
I told these things to my men. It convinced them to battle with all their might and put their trust in the Lord. We battled with them face to face and killed them with a great slaughter. We drove them out of our land again.
Then we returned with our families to our homes to tend our flocks and farm our grounds. I, Zeniff, being old, gave the kingdom to my son Noah. May the Lord bless my people. Amen.
