Helaman 5

There were more people who chose evil than people who chose good. Helaman told his sons: The devil will send his mighty winds and mighty storms to beat on you; he wants power to drag you down to misery. Obey God’s commandments. There is no other way for you to be saved, except by Jesus Christ. Remember Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Remember to build your foundation on Him.

Then Helaman sent his sons to preach from city to city. They preached with great power. God gave them the words to say. Their words amazed the Lamanites and convinced eight thousand to be baptized.

Then the armies of the Lamanites put Nephi and Lehi in prison for many days without food. The soldiers went in the prison to kill them, but Nephi and Lehi were protected by a circle of fire. Nephi and Lehi began to speak, saying: Do not fear. God shows you this wonderful thing.

When they said these words, the earth shook greatly and the walls of the prison shook as if they were about to tumble to the earth. A great darkness came and a voice came, saying: Repent, repent and do not try to kill my servants whom I have sent to you.

When they heard this voice, they noticed it was not a voice of thunder or loud noise, but a still voice of perfect mildness, like a whisper. The voice pierced them to their souls. Even though the voice was mild, it greatly shook the earth and the walls of the prison trembled.

The voice came saying: Repent, repent, the kingdom of heaven is near. Try no more to kill my servants.

Then the earth shook again and the walls trembled. And the same voice came a third time. The walls trembled again and the earth shook as if it was about to split apart.

The Lamanites were too afraid to move. One of them was a Nephite by birth who had once belonged to the Church of God but had gone away from it. His name was Aminadab. Through the darkness, he saw the faces of Nephi and Lehi. Their faces shined like angels. He saw they were looking up and talking to someone.

Aminadab yelled to the others, about three hundred of them, to turn and look at Nephi and Lehi. They asked: Who are these men talking with? Aminadab said: They are talking with angels.

The Lamanites said: What should we do? Aminadab said to them: You must repent and pray for faith in Christ. They prayed until the dark cloud was gone.

They saw they were encircled by a wall of fire. They were all with Nephi and Lehi in the middle of a flaming fire, but it did not hurt them. They were filled with unspeakable joy.

God’s Holy Spirit came down from heaven into their hearts. A pleasant voice like a whisper said: Peace to you because of your faith in my Beloved Son.

When they heard this, they looked up to see where the voice came from. They saw the heavens open. Angels came down out of heaven and blessed them.

The people were told to go and not wonder or doubt. They went and told the things they had seen to all the people. Most of the Lamanites were convinced. The believers laid down their weapons, put away their hatred and gave the Nephites their land back.
